About
this edition:
Walter
Rane studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles
prior to beginning a career in New York City as a freelance commercial
artist and illustrator. In 1994 he moved his family to Oregon
to focus on portraiture, landscapes, and the scriptural studies
for which he is becoming best-known to Latter-day Saints.

Though he began his
career as an illustrator, his approach to painting is emotional
and figurative, not literal. "I don't try to paint as if
I were there with my camera capturing the moment," Rane says.
"Rather, I try to depict what Moroni might have felt when
he found his father dead. What did he feel at that moment, knowing
that he was now alone in the world? That's what I paint."
As an added feature,
The Cricket and Seagull Fireside Chat has received permission
to feature the images our webpage, allowing you to see the paintings
as they are presented and discussed. Just follow the link above.
Our next edition,
Part Two, will feature Walter Rane and his new Book of Mormon
paintings, currently on display in the LDS Museum of Church History
and Art in Salt Lake City.

In this edition,
Part One, Walter Rane discusses his training, his philosophy of
painting and art, and talks specifically about many of his paintings.
Here he is, recorded live in November of 2004 in the auditorium
of the church museum...
