"Nativity" CD Celebrates Christ's Birth
Harpist Cate Todd and violinist Amy Osmond offer sweet, appealing Christmas music in their own arrangements.

by Laurie Williams Sowby

Among musical instruments, the sound of the harp is probably the most heavenly. Next comes a well-played violin. Happily, the two combine on a beautiful new Christmas album featuring the talents of two young musicians, harpist Cate Todd and violinist Amy Osmond.

"Nativity," produced by Sounds of Zion, features lovely arrangements by the two performing artists themselves. It is a lush, sweet album of 15 selections that evoke remembrance of Christ's birth, from "O Holy Night" to "We Three Kings." The tunes, while familiar, are performed with delicacy and originality that make the listener want to hear them again and again. Woodwinds and percussion occasionally add flavor.

A real bonus is a book with printed music, so other musicians can perform the pieces. One section offers the accompaniment and solo line for each of the 15 selections, and individual parts are included separately. They can be played on piano or any C instrument (violin, flute, etc.). In addition, there is a printed narrative which would allow the selections to be used as part of a live presentation.
