At Meridian, people often say to us that we certainly get to cover some wonderful stories and meet some amazing people. Such is true. We must report that our most delightful experiences surround being with the Prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley. Even at the distance of a camera lens, and yet within earshot of his voice, we learn from everything he speaks and we are lifted as we watch him interact with people. Gordon B. Hinckley is full of light. He is quick. He is witty. He is insightful. He is inquisitive. He is funny. He is precise. He is completely uplifting to be around.

Since Meridian now has over 320,000 readers in more than 173 countries, I always feel like I am the eyes of our audience through the lens of my camera. What I see is what you will see. I want to bring every one of you up close and get the feelings that are present at these sacred occasions. I pray that my mind and heart can be directed to use the camera in a way that will bless you, the readers of Meridian.

I took 1,409 images in two days of shooting in Kirtland this past weekend. Maurine laughs at me, the children are tired of having the lens pointed at them. And yet I cannot pass these moments of rich history and not be drawn into the vortex of compelling shutter movement meaning: I have to take pictures. Wilford Woodruff kept a daily journal for 63 ˝ years, never missing a day because he felt compelled to write down the things he experienced. I am compelled to take photographs.

How do I edit down the vast numbers to a few select ones for you to see? Well, I don’t do very well. Maurine just asked me how many photos I had pulled for today’s essay on the Prophet’s visit to Kirtland—“I have it down to 55 shots.” She laughed again. So, there may be a few less than 55, but I want you to see the Prophet and feel of his great spirit and enjoy this time with him. I will give brief captions to carry you through.
