Remembering General Conference
By C.S. Bezas

Two times a year many in the world stop to listen to the Prophet of the Church speak, in addition to the apostles and other general authorities. But will the members of the church remember these counsels during the next six months? Time for some FHE help and fun!

Opening Song: #21 Come, Listen to a Prophet's Voice

Opening Prayer: By Invitation.

Devotional: Devotionals are quick and sweet opportunities to share a few verses that held meaning during private scripture study from the previous week. Anyone who cares to share may do so during this spontaneous portion of FHE.

Activity:

Read the following scriptural account about ancient Israel found in 1 Nephi 17:41-42:

41 And he did straiten them in the wilderness with his rod; for they hardened their hearts, even as ye have; and the Lord straitened them because of their iniquity. He sent fiery flying serpents among them; and after they were bitten he prepared a way that they might be healed; and the labor which they had to perform was to look; and because of the simpleness of the way, or the easiness of it, there were many who perished.

42 And they did harden their hearts from time to time, and they did revile against Moses, and also against God; nevertheless, ye know that they were led forth by his matchless power into the land of promise.

Bear witness that the Lord's promises are sure. Read the following scriptures:

  1. Amos 3:7  Surely the Lord God will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.
  2. Luke 6:46: And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?

After reading the selected scriptures, ask the following questions:

  1. Why would some of the ancient children of Israel refuse to listen to their prophet, preferring to die rather than be healed?
  2. Who can remember some of the counsel just given during the past General Conference weekend? What was it?
  3. Why will some of modern day Israel refuse to listen?
  4. What will we choose to do as a family? How will we do so?

Share an experience you had where you were grateful you listened to wise counsel. Invite others in the family to do the same. Close with your testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and the power of righteous living, which comes from hearkening to God's servants.

Closing Song: #10 Follow the Prophet (from the Children's Songbook)

Closing Prayer: By Invitation.

Refreshments: Here is an ultimate cinnamon roll recipe: the Cinnabon Cinnamon Roll. It is very, very delicious. As your family enjoys this treat, remind them that the Lord's blessings can be equally as satiating and as appealing as these cinnamon rolls. Extend your love to your family and invite them to help each other hearken to the newest counsel just given in General Conference.
