Sometimes we think we must get things right the first time. This week's FHE lesson teaches in easy fashion that the Lord is far more patient than we might think. Time for some FHE Fun!
Opening Song: #87 God is Love (sing all verses for the full effect)
Opening Prayer: By invitation.
Devotional: Allow a few minutes for spontaneous scripture sharing. Has anyone had a verse of scripture help them this week?
Activity:
Ask for a volunteer to come forward. Have them stand directly in front of you and then tell you what you are thinking at that very moment (do not help them). When they are unable to “read your mind”, pretend that you are disgusted with their inability to do so. But then smile, give them a quick hug, and ask them to return to their seat. Ask for another volunteer to come and try to deduce what you are thinking. When they are unable to, ask them why they couldn't. Does it help if you get disgusted with their failed attempt?
Application:
So often we have unrealistic expectations as to what we “should” do in life or what others “must” do. When we fail in those expectations, unfortunately at times we become disgusted with ourselves (or worse, with others). Ask the family why Heavenly Father is not this way?
Read the following scripture from 2 Timothy 2:24:
“And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient…” (emphasis added).
Ask the family why it is that the Lord's servants are gentle, even with themselves? Invite them to ponder during the week the Lord's great love for them and what He would have them feel when they've made a mistake. Promise them that as they choose simply to try again and put their faith in Him, that He will be there for them. He doesn't ask them to get disgusted at their errors; He simply asks that they keep making efforts at living a good life.
Close with your testimony.
Closing Song: #125 How Gentle God's Commands
Closing Prayer: By invitation.
Refreshments: Jello treats that are see-through would make a great thematic refreshment for this FHE. Whether pre-purchased as ready-made or whether you choose to make the clear gelatin together after FHE, the point is that seeing clearly helps bring contentment in life. We need not be hard on ourselves when we fail at worthy endeavors. We simply keep trying, which is all the Lord asks.
