Make a Joyful Noise
By C.S. Bezas

Why is the gospel of Jesus Christ the "good news"? Christmas carols contain the secret. Come celebrate Christmas with this simple Family Home Evening. Time for some FHE Fun!

FHE Fun!

Opening Song: #34 He Sent His Son (Children's Songbook)

Opening Prayer: By Invitation.

Devotional: Start FHE with a few minutes of spontaneous scripture sharing amongst family members. This not only builds the spiritual sensitivities of the individual who reads a verse and then explains its power, but it also aids others who may be quietly struggling (and needing to hear the inspired message). It is not required that each person share — only those who may have found a meaningful scripture during the previous week.

Activity:

Some of the best messages of the gospel are contained in children's carols about Jesus Christ. Spend a few minutes singing through the following Christmas songs; some are new, some are familiar (click on each link to hear the song played). But before you sing, ask the family to look for the Christmas message of the songs. What secrets do they contain why Jesus' coming can bring great joy to each of God's children? Also invite family members to notice the change in the Spirit that comes when we sing of God's son and His gift to us. Make sure to sing all the verses!

  1. #38 When Joseph Went to Bethlehem (Children's Songbook)
  2. #51 Have a Very Merry Christmas (Children's Songbook)
  3. #50 Picture a Christmas (Children's Songbook)
  4. #42 Away In a Manger (Children's Songbook)
  5. Your family's favorite Christmas carol!

Application:

Invite family members to share their feelings about Christmas and the special feeling that comes this time of year when we focus on the Savior and serving others. Share your feelings of love for each one in the family. Let your family know that through Jesus Christ, we can know joy as we follow His pattern for us. And through the carols of Christmas, both old and new, we can be renewed...even while facing the burdens of life.

Closing Song: #54 Christmas Bells (Children's Songbook)

Closing Prayer: By Invitation.

Refreshments: This delicious German Christmas Gingerbread will be sure to be a new family favorite, or how about these Christmas cookie countdown recipes? Either way, enjoy the time snacking, loving and laughing with your children during this important time of year.
