Christmas is coming quickly. The economy is failing swiftly. What are parents to do to provide a beautiful season for their children? Here is a simple suggestion that may provide eternal treasures. Time for some FHE Fun!
FHE Fun!
Opening Song: #42 Away In A Manger
Opening Prayer: By Invitation.
Devotional: Why not start with a family member volunteering to share something spiritual from the week? Maybe someone had an "ah ha" moment during personal scripture study. Or maybe a missionary moment. Or a change of heart—or some other manifestation. The sharing of these spiritual moments might feel awkward at first, but what an excellent opportunity to strengthen spiritual sensitivity within the family.
Activity:
- Small empty box or basket
- Three pieces of paper wadded into ball shape
- Ask for "a volunteer" to come forward. Give the volunteer the balls of paper and instruct him or her to stand three feet from the box.
- They are to throw the paper balls into the box ... except they must turn away from the box before doing so (their back should now be towards the box).
- Have them throw the balls over their shoulder without looking, trying to get them in the box. (Only one try allowed per paper wad.)
- Then have them turn around to face the box and step one foot closer. This time re-toss each paper ball directly into the box. The paper balls should go in much easier!
Application:
Sometimes happiness can be hard to find, especially if we ignore the Lord's counsel (i.e. turning our back on Him like the "volunteer" turned his or her back on the box). But if we turn to the Lord, we will find much easier the joy we seek.
One of the counsels the Lord has given us is to serve one another. Many people suffer during this time of year. Why not make it a game to see how many people the family can serve by the time Christmas comes? The Santa Letters site http://www.thesantaletters.org/main.html?src=%2F#7,0 is an excellent place for ideas, with free downloadable "Santa" letters to brighten another struggling family.
Closing Song: #201 Joy to the World
Closing Prayer: By Invitation.
Refreshments: Along the theme of "balls," here is an Easy Cheese Ball recipe. (You can also add 1/3 c. crushed pineapple or roll the cheese ball in paprika for an extra special touch.) Cheese balls make fun and quick FHE treats ... completed by your choice of favorite crackers. Enjoy spending time with your priceless family!
