M E R I D I A N M A G A Z I N E Temple Square Performances for October 2009 Fall is a wonderful time to come to Temple Square and enjoy the beauty of the fall colors, as well as to listen to beautiful music. October brings an exciting month of concerts on Temple Square with four scheduled for the Assembly Hall and three performances in the Tabernacle. All events are open to ages eight and older and are free. Friday, October 9---The world renowned American Piano Quartet will perform in the Assembly Hall at 7:30 p.m. Robin Hancock, Scott Holden, Paul Pollei, and Jeffrey Shumway will share their pianistic talents as they play together on two pianos. Works include Grand Galop Chromatique by Liszt; Salvonic Dances, op. 46 by Dvorak; Ragtime Medley by Bailey; Mack Wilberg’s Fantasy on Themes from the opera Carmen, as well as other pieces. Saturday, October 10---The Utah All-State Choir, comprised of outstanding high school singers from throughout the state, will present a program in the Tabernacle at 7:30 p.m. This concert is the Grand Festival concert sponsored by the Utah Music Educators Association (UMEA). Friday, October 16---The Orchestra of Sandy, conducted by Joel Rosenberg, will play a program featuring Symphony in C by Bizet; Danse Macabre by Saint-Säens; and Symphony No. 9 in E Minor, Op. 95 by Dvorak in the Assembly Hall at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, October 17---Soprano Shawna Gottfredson will present an operatic concert in the Assembly Hall at 7:30 p.m. She will be joined by associate artists Lawrence Gee, piano; Susan Goodfellow, flute; and Melissa price, violin. Her program will include selections by Antonio Vivaldi, Claude Debussy, Richard Strauss, Amy Beach, Michael Head, and Adolph Adam. Friday and Saturday, October 23-24---The Orchestra at Temple Square will present fall concerts in the Tabernacle, under the direction of conductor Igor Gruppman. Saturday, October 30---The Church Relief Society Music Festival, featuring works of distinction submitted through the annual Church Music Submission, will take place in the Assembly Hall at 7:30 p.m. Music will be sung by a Relief Society choir from the Bountiful Utah North Stake. All pieces have either been composed or arranged by Latter-day Saint women. In addition, 30-minute organ recitals are held in the Tabernacle weekdays and Saturdays at 12:00 p.m. and Sundays at 2:00 p.m. Also, Mormon Tabernacle Choir rehearsals are open to the public in the Tabernacle on Thursday evenings at 8:00 p.m., as is “Music and the Spoken Word” on Sundays featuring the Mormon Tabernacle Choir when doors open at 8 a.m. and close at 9:15 a.m. for the 9:30 a.m. 30-minute broadcast.
