Former
Dean of Harvard Business School to Speak at DC Temple Visitors’
Center
KENSINGTON, Maryland — Kim B. Clark, the
15th president of Brigham Young University-Idaho, will speak about
“Becoming a Disciple Leader,” Tuesday, April 15, 2008,
at the Washington DC Temple Visitors’ Center. The event will
begin at 7:30 p.m.
Clark, whose career at Harvard spanned almost
three decades, advocates the need for leaders whose central focus
is values. While being interviewed by Meridian Magazine, he reiterated
his belief in three core values central to both leadership in general
and learning in school. They are integrity, respect for other people,
and personal accountability.
President Clark’s own life reflects these
three core values. He and his wife Sue are the parents of seven
children and the grandparents of ten grandchildren. He extended
rules for the use of his time when they started to have children.
He built some walls around his time at home with the family so that
his work didn’t intrude upon it. He didn’t work at night
or on weekends, but admitted this rule didn’t say he couldn’t
get up early.
President Clark revealed that he learned a valuable
lesson from good friends and colleagues that success in the kind
of work you do, depends somewhat less on the number of hours you
put in and a lot more the productivity of that time and the quality
of the thought that goes into it.
President of BYU-Idaho since October 2005, he
served as Dean of the Faculty at Harvard Business School for ten
years and also was the George R. Baker Professor of Administration.
Clark received the B.A. (1974, M.A. (1977), and PH.D (1978) degrees
in economics from Harvard.
In addition to his research on modularity
in design and the integration of technology and competition in industry
evolution, he is the co-author of the book Design Rules: The
Power of Modularity (MIT Press, 2000).
