Leaders Urge Young Women to Make Good Choices

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A Church leader told 20,000 young Mormon women on Saturday night that choices made at a young age can ultimately determine the course of a person's life.

President Henry B. Eyring, first counselor in the Church's First Presidency, spoke about the journey of life and the choices that need to be made along the way. He said that decisions take a person nearer to or further from God.

“You make choices every day and almost every hour that keep you walking in the light or moving away toward darkness,” President Eyring said. “Some of the most important choices are about what you set your heart upon.”

Citing examples from his own life as well as from the scriptures, he illustrated the importance of learning how to tell right from wrong.

“You must have faith to pray. You must have faith to ponder the word of God. You must have faith to do those things and go to those places which invite the Spirit of Christ and the Holy Ghost,” President Eyring said.

Standing as a witness of Jesus Christ was the theme of the remarks by Susan W. Tanner, Young Women general president. She spoke about the need to develop inner strength so wise decisions can be made throughout life.

She told the young women that when they have the courage to stand for what they know is right, God will help them in times of need. She shared stories about how her children upheld their faith while growing up.

Speaking of how hard it can be to make good choices during tough personal times, Sister Tanner added about her children, “They could have felt alone, but as they stood as witnesses, they felt the companionship and sustaining presence of the Holy Ghost.”
