The Manhattan Temple Dedication
Part 11:  The Youth Come to the Temple

A Photographic Essay

By Scot and Maurine Proctor

We’re always fascinated by the youth and their families as they come to temple dedications.  This is such a time of unity and happiness.  It is a time when parents and children get to feel the Spirit of the Lord together in a holy place.  It truly is time of rejoicing.

In this last section we just wanted to capture a few shots of the youth and families who were here outside the temple on this day, June 13, 2004.

Editors’ Note:  In days to come we will give you a few scenes from the Youth Jubilee at Radio City Music Hall.  We hope that the Saints in the Manhattan New York Temple district will pass all these photo essays around to as many of their family and friends via the web as possible.

Mothers and daughters were out today in great abundance.

I loved this little boy’s sincerity.  He was tired but very determined.  I’m not sure whether his tie ever got fixed, but there was no question of his heart.

These two girl were a little cold in that early-morning New York breeze and wanted to be held close to their mother.  One of these would later be asked to help the Prophet in the cornerstone ceremony.

Nine-year-old Michaela Proctor (happens to be our daughter) always loves to wear her Daddy’s suit coat to stay warm.  She was so happy to be here for the dedication.

Mother and son arrive and pause briefly for a photo before getting in line on the north side of the temple.

Not sure how this happened or who sneaked it in, but if you look closely in this photo there is a football midway between the two boys there.  A three way game of catch ensued for some time in front of the temple to help “pass” the time in waiting.

Sister Coleen Menlove, General Primary President, graciously took a few minutes to talk to our daughter, Michaela, about the temple, the things of the Spirit and a number of other spiritual issues.

The youth were helping put on the little booties that were used to place over the shoes of those who went into the temple.

There’s just nothing greater than families.  I loved watching the families come to the temple.

“My grandmother loves pictures like this,” this young woman told me.  And rightly so; this is a moment in eternity.  As Oliver Cowdery wrote, “These were days never to be forgotten.”
