Books for a Happy Back-to-School
By Holly E. Newton
Get out your rulers, pencils – and especially books – because school is back in session! Here are some great new picture books on the subject.
This first book is specifically for the first day jitters and it's hilarious. Go Home, Mrs. Beekman!, by Ann Redisch Stampler, and illustrated by Marsha Gray Carrington, deals with both parent and child and their separation anxieties. Initially, Emily doesn't want to ever leave her mom and so mom promises to go to school with her every day. But it doesn't take Emily long to realize that she can go to school without mom, but now mom doesn't want to leave! A fun and funny situation that will make your youngster less anxious!
Happy School Year!, by Susan Milord, and illustrated by Mary Newell DePalma, will get a cheering hurray from children everywhere as they read about the celebration of the beginning of the school year.
School Fever, by Brod Bagert, and illustrated by Robert Neubecker, is a collection of poems about one boy's experiences as he goes through his school year. A mouse in the library, a crush on the teacher and friendship are some of the topics included in the book.
Something For School, by Hyun Young Lee, relates how small mistakes can become very large with small children. Young Yoon is excited to begin kindergarten when her classmates mistakenly take her for a boy. See how she reacts to this dilemma.
And here is another look at five year olds as they have been looking forward to going to kindergarten for years. Another Important Book, by favorite author – Margaret Wise Brown, and illustrated by Chris Raschka, takes a look at each important year leading up to school age.
On the Way to Kindergartenby Virginia Kroll, and illustrated by Elisabeth Schlossberg, follows this same theme as an adorable cub is learning all about his young life leading up to this first year in school.
If you are experiencing a move to a new school, The New Bear at School, by Carrie Weston, and illustrated by Tim Warnes, will help with the adjustment. Boris, the bear, looks frightening because of his sharp-toothed smile, but the students finally learn that there's more to him than how he looks!
Splat the Cat, by Rob Scotton, is hilarious and very pertinent to the beginning of school worries. Splat worries he'll have no friends at school so he brings his pet mouse. But when the mouse escapes, the fellow cats excitedly chase him. There are great lessons to be learned here and the pictures are adorable!
Slippers at School, by Andrew Clements, and illustrated by Janie Bynum, will make you recheck your backpack. Slippers, the puppy, wants to go to school with Laura so he slips secretly into her backpack and his adventure begins.
Keisha Ann Can!, by Daniel Kirk, is a positive reinforcement of all that you can become in a catchy rhyming text declaring all that young Keisha Ann can accomplish!
Here's a book that will help navigate inappropriate behavior at school. Bella has a very loud voice that's not working in the classroom. But Booming Bella, by Carol Ann Williams, and illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss, soon learns when and when not to use her “outside” voice.
And for those children who can read at level 2 with help, here's an anthology of poems to help celebrate school. Hamsters, Shells and Spelling Bees: School Poems, (I Can Read!), edited by Lee Bennett Hopkins, and illustrated by Sachiko Yoshikawa, is fun, easy to read and sure to hit the mark for school lessons!
And for those kids who are just plain tired of school, The Retired Kid, by Jon Agee, is the perfect book for them. Eight-year-old Brian is exhausted from going to school year after year, so he is ready to head to Florida to the “Happy Sunset Retirement Community”. But what awaits him there will make him come back to school in a hurry!
Lastly, here's a book to place all of the year's memories down in writing. Collectopia: The All-Year Yearbook, by Catherine Rondeau and Peggy Brown, and illustrated by Lisa Perrett, encourages writing down events as they happen throughout the year! And very nicely packaged with stickers and a special spot for keepsakes.
