Editor's note: Today's article is the fifth regular monthly update of a column that ran in Meridian for 45 straight weeks, exploring a new diet based on mental and spiritual rather than physical paradigms. All 45 of those installments, edited and enhanced, are now available in the form of a great new book, simply called the Bridell diet.  At this point, the book is only available to Meridian readers.  Click here for information on ordering.  Dr. Bridell's promise to you who follow the diet is that you will lose a substantial amount of weight — and that this weight loss will actually be the least important of the ways in which you will benefit!  There will also be a "Bridell Posse" formed to round up others who need the diet and as a support group for those who are participating in the diet.  You can join the posse as you order the book.

I am Dr Bridell and you are a Meridian reader who has likely followed the development of the Bridell eat-half diet over the past year.  As you know, this is the logical and rational, poetic and beautiful, and fully guaranteed diet that has already helped hundreds of people lose thousands of pounds.

The diet is based on mental and spiritual rather than physical paradigms. It is arranged in "bite-sized chunks" that have been going out to readers on a weekly basis for more than a year. Click here to review a few sample chapters from the archives of Meridian Magazine.

My promise is that those who follow the diet will lose a substantial amount of weight —.and that this weight loss will be the least important of the ways in which they will benefit! And the good news is that the entire diet is now available as a book, and a lovely one if I do say so myself.  Click here to order copies of the book.

The Bridell Book:  Worth the Wait!

I am holding in my hands the first Bridell Diet book off the press!  (Well, actually, I set it down so that I could type, but I am looking at it) And I like what I see.  Hats off to Meridian, particularly to Scot Proctor, who is reinventing the publishing process by turning a column into a book and by offering the entire first edition to Meridian readers.  Thanks also to Kathy Kidd and Darla Isackson for their marvelous editing, and to Scott Eggers for his awesome cover design (you will not think this book looks dull — and you will not misplace it, because it is too easy to see!)  I think, both in the writing and in the "look" we have come up with the right combination of serious, clear dieting ideas that are appealing and that work — and a light, fun spirit that makes the diet inviting and even adventuresome rather than depressing or overwhelming.

A book you won’t easily lose!
I am confident (largely because of the overwhelming response — and dieting results — that has poured in from Meridian readers) that we have a diet approach that will be a popular revolution!  It is simply the most logical and rational, the most poetic and beautiful diet out there.  (It helps a little that the current best selling diet books [our competition] base their approaches on astrology, and on blood type, and on maple syrup!)

But we don't need to talk about competing with other books just yet!  Because the book, for right now, for the first edition or two, is just for Meridian readers, and this is the only place you can order it.  We will save the "bookstore and best-seller" route for later.

So — before you even read any further, click
here and get your copy on its way to you.  It really helps to have the book.  Even if you have read all the columns and been attempting to implement them, there is something about having it all between two covers.  You can carry it around.  You can mark it.  You can flag the parts you are having the hardest time implementing.

The book commits you more deeply, and makes the diet more real.  I can tell you that having the "physical, tangible book" even helps the person who wrote it!  I have had the book for a week now, and it has helped me already to fine tune how I am dieting, and it has helped me recommit to some parts of it that I was slipping a little on!

As excited as we are about the new Bridell diet book, we are already going beyond the book and creating something of a Bridell club, or organization, or "posse" to help and motivate each of us to implement the diet, and to get it to others who would benefit from it. This new website is still under construction, but here is an explanatory letter to new and old readers explaining how the whole Bridell conglomeration will work.

A Little History of the Bridell Diet, and how to join the "Bridell Posse" and become a "Bookstore"

During the past year, as Meridian readers became familiar with Dr Bridell and his revolutionary new diet, demand for the program in book form continued to grow, thousands of letters and e mails were received, and at the end of last year, plans for publication were announced. Requests for the Bridell diet book continue to pour in, and many readers want multiple copies of the book to get them to friends and relatives (or to be "bookstores" that sell them in a more personal way than a store ever could).

I have not been able to answer each individual letter because there have just been too many of them. But be assured that if you wrote in before the end of May, we have you on the list for a discounted copy from the first edition.  You should have been contacted via e-mail by now. If you have not been contacted, drop us a quick e mail letting us know when you made your request, and how many copies you reserved.

We also held a drawing, and picked 250 "winners" from the thousands of respondents who will receive a free book. While the drawing is now over, and the first edition sold out, the book is now advertised and "orderable" here at Meridian.

Perhaps more importantly, we have now decided that all readers of the column or of the book are eligible to join the "Bridell Posse," which will be an on line coalition of Bridell diet devotees who share experiences and ideas and results and who receive quantity discounts on books for distribution (by gift or by sales) to friends and acquaintances who they feel could also benefit from the Bridell diet and the whole Bridell philosophy.

Posse members who order in lots of 5 or more will receive a discount, (and big savings on shipping) and the books they receive will be from a special "posse edition" where each book is signed and personalized by Dr. Bridell.

Basically, members of the posse will become "personal bookstores" that get the books to their friends. The reason this makes me so happy as writer is that I know this special edition will go to established Bridell readers, who already know and appreciate the concepts and spiritual connections of the diet (or they will go to those that you give or sell the book to — along with your explanation and testimonial). Thus everyone who gets the special edition will have some kind of personal tie to me and to the origin of the book.

Also, please continue to send me your inputs and thoughts, but know that I may answer some of them in the ongoing First Friday of the month column on Meridian rather than by individual return email.

I have to tell you, I have enjoyed so much getting to know so many of you through your letters, and receiving your inputs. I have written other, earlier books, and writing can sometimes be a lonely process, and a little like a one-way conversation. I have loved the interactivity of the column, and I don't want to give up that association. That is one reason that we formed the posse.

Besides, it just seemed like the appropriate thing to do when dealing with a horse metaphor and when we have the objective of rounding up others who may want or need or appreciate the principles and practices of the diet.

Logistics

Here's how it will work: All first edition and special edition book receivers will automatically become members of the posse, and will soon be sent a username and password that will get them into the special "posse" section of an on line website that will be called DrBridell.com (original huh!).

The site will have additional information and insights about the diet, and I will even have a blog that will be available only to posse members (I want to share personal things with you — including my own experiences with my own diet!)

But besides keeping us in close and personal touch, the website and blog but will be the key to a whole new kind of book distribution. I've mentioned before that I am a little fed up with how books are usually sold so impersonally, just in bookstores with a big markup, and often out of stock so you have to order it and go back again to pick it up. The book will eventually be in regular retail bookstores of course, but how much better it is to have posse members become "personal bookstores" and sell autographed, personalized, special edition copies to people they know and who they can work on the diet together with.

The DrBridell.com website will also be an on line support group, where posse members can share their own diet experiences (both successes and failures) and can share ideas and motivation to make it work better for us all. We will also share with each other the broader spiritual truths that the diet is a "type" and metaphor for — and the experiences of sipping and savoring life and learning to enjoy it more.

The diet, as you all know by now, is not only a way of eating, but a way of thinking and a way of living, and with a whole posse of us working on it together, we will all have the additional benefits of shared thoughts, experiences, and motivations. And the web, of course, is the perfect place for this to happen.

If you requested first edition copies before May 1, 2007, or if you now order special "posse" edition books, your name will go into the file that qualifies you for the posse, and we will keep you updated both here on this developing web site and by e mail.

Be sure to continue to follow the ongoing Bridell column on Meridian on the first Friday of each month, (look for the same "medicine bottle" logo) and be patient as this site and the whole Bridell Posse organization develops. The Bridell archives at Meridian will no longer include all past columns, but they will have many sample columns (or chapters from the book) that you can email to friends, neighbors and relatives whom you would like to acquaint with the Bridell Diet.

In the Meantime

Now here is my suggestion to you: As you receive your copy of the Bridell book, reread it carefully even though you may have already seen most of it in Meridian columns. Having it all in a book that you can mark and cross-reference is a whole new ballgame. With the book, (and with some powerful resolve) you can become a true expert in living the Bridell diet.

I know from your letters that there are thousands of you who, despite your acceptance and agreement with the principles of the diet, are not fully living it yet! Toughen up! As you read the book, recommit yourself to both the diet and the philosophy and the paradigm of controlling appetites.

I would like to challenge you to make the diet a part of you and a part of your life before you start giving or selling the book to others. That way, you will be a living testimonial of it as you distribute it. You will be a fruit of the diet not only in terms of the weight you have lost but in terms of how your mind and your spirit functions and in terms of your new awareness and perspective.

Love and Blessings, Dr Bridell

About the Author:

The Mysterious Dr Bridell

“Dr Bridell” is a pseudonym — both the "Dr" and the "Bridell." I’m not a doctor. I’m not a dietitian either, or an exercise therapist or anything else that would give me even the remotest of the usual "credentials" for writing about the usual kind of diet. What I am is basically a practical person who is interested mostly in results. I’m also a writer who keeps noticing that diet books are always on the best-seller list. (And most of them promise far more than they can deliver and never reach the emotional and spiritual causes of our physical problems.)

I don’t know a thing about calories or fat grams or metabolism or antioxidants or even proteins or carbohydrates. In a way this ignorance is bliss. I don’t get confused about why the experts keep changing their minds about what is really good or bad for you. But I do know — absolutely — a couple of important things: 1. I know a way almost anyone can lose weight, for sure, for real, and keep it off and be healthier and actually enjoy the process; 2. I know that there is a direct, unbreakable connection between human happiness and the control of human appetites — and I don’t just mean the appetite for food.

Just how sure am I about this? Well, as you noticed in the first column, I’m sure enough to guarantee it. You try this diet and if it doesn’t work, I want to know about it, and I will think of a way to reward you for your (my) failure. But that won't happen, because I know this stuff works. I know it by experience, and I know it because it is based on principles that work — on spiritual principles that never fail. And as you will see in future weeks, my diet is about much more than physical food and losing physical weight.

What I like about the subject of dieting is that it’s current, it’s present, it’s about the now, about our daily habits and routines, about what you’re going to eat today and tonight. You can start trying things right now. As you do, and as you have results, and thoughts, and comments, and ideas, and questions, write to me by clicking here (drbridell@meridianmagazine.com).
