SALT LAKE CITY – Well-known Latter-day Saint artist Walter Rane will lecture about his art on Thursday, 4 November 2004, at 7:30 p.m., at the Museum of Church History and Art. The lecture is free of charge and open to the public.

Rane’s lecture is being held in conjunction with the recent opening of a new display of his art at the museum. Nineteen large-scale paintings that illustrate stories from the Book of Mormon are on exhibit through 17 April 2005.

Scenes from the Land of Promise: Book of Mormon Paintings by Walter Rane features seventeen paintings created in 2003 for a Deseret Book publication entitled By the Hand of Mormon, plus two paintings of Book of Mormon themes previously acquired by the museum.

The exhibit includes a wide range of themes from the Book of Mormon, beginning with the trek of Lehi’s family in the wilderness and concluding with an emotional portrayal of the Prophet Moroni after the last great battle that marked the final decline of the Nephite nation.

Walter Rane has enjoyed a long career as a successful professional artist. He was a freelance commercial artist in New York City for twenty years before moving to Oregon, where he has focused on the religious narrative paintings that have become familiar and loved by Latter-day Saints.

Rane has studied and emulated the art and techniques of the Old Masters. About the works in this exhibit, he said, “Painting pictures of people doing things is what I love. Getting into the Book of Mormon gave me a whole new set of image possibilities. Rembrandt didn’t know about Nephi.”

Rane’s lecture will focus on his experiences painting the Book of Mormon series and other scriptural themes, and review his ideas about the importance of art in his life. The lecture will be held in the Museum Theater. Limited seating is available and will be handled on a first come, first served basis. Free parking is available at the lot located at 40 North and 200 West.

The museum is located across the street from the Tabernacle, at 45 North West Temple, a half block north of the Temple Square TRAX station. Hours are 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. weekdays, and 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday, and most holidays. Admission is free.
